The cause of Alzheimer's disease is not known, but it is NOT a part of normal aging.  The destruction of nerve cells (also called "neurons") leads to a decrease in neurotransmitters (substances secreted by a neuron to cause an effect in another neuron). The correct balance of neurotransmitters is critical to the brain. Three neurotransmitters commonly affected by AD are acetylcholine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, with acetylcholine being the most affected.  Late onset AD, the most common form of the disease, develops in people 60 and older and is thought to be less likely to occur in families. Rather, the genes may affect the formation of plaques and tangles or other AD-related pathologies in the brain.

Words from us

Wayne’s World
What is aging?  Dr. Denham Harman wrote that “Aging is the accumulation of diverse deleterious changes in the cells and tissues with advancing age that increase the risk of disease and death.”  Dr. Harman is the author of the free radical theory of aging, which states that molecules with unpaired electrons steal from other molecules, and so set up a chain reaction that damages healthy cells.  Aging starts when we begin to eat, because the chemical routines that convert our food into energy require the power produced by the cells’ mitochondria.  While producing energy, mitochondria also produce free radicals, causing oxidation by stealing electrons from healthy molecules.  The gradual decline of health as time passes is ultimately a series of cells losing their ability to work properly.  The oxidation of the body in this manner and others is combated naturally by antioxidants.  Learn about these antioxidants and start using them daily. Some examples are: Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), CoQ10, vitamins C & E, Beta Carotene, Ginkgo Biloba and proanthocyanidins.  Four of the major age-related diseases (cardiovascular, osteoporosis, cancer and macular degeneration) respond favorably to antioxidant supplementation.

The Evelyn Files…

We have all been conditioned to grow old.  In my opinion, the first thing we need to do to reverse this is reprogram the brain to stay young and healthy.  Marjorie Holmes suggests the following in her book God and Vitamins: eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, don’t overcook your food, never take drugs, keep strong ties with your family and friends, avoid worry and stress, exercise, keep busy and think positively.  Last but not least, supplement your diet with the best vitamins, minerals, enzymes and herbs.  Keep smiling!
Good health to you always. Evelyn J

There is a lot of focus on human growth hormone (HGH) recently. HGH is a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland that is believed to promote lean body mass, accelerate healing, improve energy levels, reduce wrinkles, promote memory, and accelerate healing. Levels of HGH naturally decline with age so many people have been looking for ways to restore their previous HGH levels. Initially HGH injections were offered though they were extremely expensive and came with dangers such as diabetes. Now companies are coming out with safer alternatives. Secretagogues are the most popular. These are amino acids, sometimes combined with herbs, which provide the building blocks for HGH and that help stimulate its secretion. Arginine is one of the primary amino acids used in these formulas, though it should be kept in mind that if arginine is not balanced out with the amino acid lysine the arginine can trigger herpes outbreaks in those susceptible to herpes. Homeopathic HGH sprays and sprays containing tiny amounts of HGH are also available. Chlorella contains a similar growth hormone, known as chlorella growth factor. My preference is the use of herbs to stimulate HGH production. Bupleurum, magnolia bark and cacao all raise dopamine levels, which in turn stimulate the production and secretion of HGH.

Tarah’s Corner-  The secret to longevity doesn’t cost money, and it might be the most difficult thing to achieve for some people.  The secret is to stop worrying.  The power of your anger and stress has the potential to harm your body seriously.  Do anything you can to get your anger out of your body.  I find a really good way is through exercise.  Meditation is another great way.  You would be surprised how much of a difference one stress-free day makes.  I wish there was a way to make people see how worrying effects their stomach, skin, hormones and all the organs in their bodies.  We have many helpful products here at Stay Healthy!  including Kava Kava, which is my personal favorite.  A product called “Happy Camper” is also good.  Another great way to relax is to get out of town for a while.  Go camp in the mountains or go fishing, because like they say, “nature’s heals all.”  I don’t care if you are the healthiest eater in the world and you take all your vitamins and herbs, if you are a worrier you won’t be a healthy person.

J.C. Speaking Words of Wisdom
True health and longevity will always consist of “The Trinity of Health”
(body, mind, and spirit) I personally believe this to be the most overlooked aspect to anti-aging.
The ancient Taoist masters believed that the union between man and woman was the most fundamental aspect to anti-aging. By joining the two forces of yin and yang they could stimulate vital hormones and chi energy to enhance their body, mind and spirit beyond that of normal people. They believed a relationship should consist of harmonious interactions that relate not only to tantric yoga sexual practices, but sensual touching, cooking healing meals, and spending quality time doing things you both enjoy. Many couples spend no time together doing things that bond them on more then one level, like meditation, relaxing massage, reading or learning something together, or going out to nature. This may not seem important, but in fact this will build a solid physical, mental and spiritual relationship. Try to share some quality time together with your loved one and both of you will benefit from the natural high that comes from a loving relationship.  Be sure to tell your loved ones “I Love You” today!!!
