Words from us

Wayne’s World
“I am in that temper that if I were under water I would scarcely kick to come to the top.” John Keats

The demons of depression exact a terrible toll on human happiness and productivity – even on life itself.  However, the scientific quest to understand the origins of this affliction and to ameliorate it are paying off.  For example, a study at the Yale University School of Medicine shows a strong link between depression and low levels of compounds called catecholamines in our bodies.  Research points to the facts that people who suffer from bouts of clinical depression are biochemically different from those who are normal and healthy, even when they are in remission and appear normal and healthy.  Catecholamines are biologically active compounds that play key roles in body functions, and one such vital role is regulating the function of our nervous system, both central and peripheral.  Catecholamines are obtained exclusively by synthesis from nutrient molecules in our foods, thus the necessity of a good diet and proper supplementation.  The amino acids phenylalanine and tyrosine are nutrient precursors to one catecholamine in particular, noradrenaline, which is involved in mood regulation.  The best known catecholamines are dopamine, noradrenaline, and adrenaline, and their deficiency is implicated in age-related mental problems, including depression.  Dietary amino acids are capable of sustaining mood, but optimal concentrations may be lacking in a person’s genetic makeup or normal diet, hence the need for nutrient supplementation.  In addition to amino acids, include a food-based comprehensive multiple-vitamin, stabilized fish oil, essential fatty acids (Udo’s Oil), antioxidants (especially C and E), and good food choices, clean water, proper amounts of sleep and adequate exercise.  Pay close attention to the other recommendations on this subject from our staff included here-in, and remember to love yourself and others.
Stay healthy by putting the correct molecules in your stomach, and thus into your head.

Jenny's Jive:
Depression is a residual effect of emotional & mental weakness. Dealing with depression requires the understanding of this. People need to realize that the strength to deal with depression comes from within. Exercise encourages the relief of depression by allowing the mind to focus on the body rather than internalizing & wallowing in negative thoughts. Through exercise one can release many toxic thoughts & emotions. Stretching, breathing, & cardiovascular exercises are proven to be most effective in stress reduction & fighting depression. Depression can also be associated with nutrient deficiencies. Nutrition is the key to your brain’s behavior. Essential fatty acids aid in brain function. Supplements can help aid in the relief of stress caused by depression, but the majority of the healing comes from self- realization.

Jeff's Positive Vibrations:
Depression affects an estimated 17 million Americans every year, making it one of the most common medical problems in the United States . It affects young and old and is twice as common in women as in men. Depression is a whole-body illness that affects the body, nervous system, moods, thoughts, and behavior. It affects the way you eat and sleep, the way you feel about yourself, and the way you react to and think about the people and things around you. Symptoms can last for weeks, months, or years. There are many types of depression, with variations in the number of symptoms, their severity, and persistence. The causes of depression are not fully understood but may be triggered by tension, stress, a traumatic life event, chemical imbalances in the brain, thyroid disorders, nutritional deficiencies, poor diet, the consumption of sugar, lack of exercise, endometriosis, any serious physical disorders or allergies. Heredity is a significant factor in this disorder. In up to 50 % of people suffering from recurrent episodes of depression, one or both parents also experienced depression. Foods greatly influence the brain’s behavior. A poor diet, especially one with a lot of junk foods, is a common cause of depression. The levels of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters, which regulate our behavior, are controlled by what we eat and are closely linked to mood. The following nutrients are helpful for those suffering for depression: Essential – E.F.A.’S, 5-HTP, L-Tyrosine (caution: do not take if you are on MAO inhibitor drugs.), B complex, zinc. Helpful – calcium and magnesium, chromium, a multivitamin and multimineral complex, NADH, and vitamin C.

J.C. Speaking Words of Wisdom
In Chinese medical philosophy emotional disorders are caused by disharmony or blockage of chi or energy.  Energy or chi flows around the body in meridians, somewhat like the way the blood flows in arteries and veins.  When we practice chi kung (energy work), we stimulate better chi flow. There are time-proven chi-kung exercises that can help build exuberant health and vitality. Please ask me to show you or give you more info. Excessive sorrow may weaken a person’s chi so much that its’ flow to their mind may become insufficient to operate certain mental functions, resulting in depression. That is why people who suffer from depression and are treated with conventional medicine have their problem occur again and again. Only the symptom is being treated, not the whole person’s root cause. Symptoms stemming from emotional or spiritual issues are often overlooked and usually are the underlining cause. Depression can also be attributed to poor diet, lack of sleep and environment. Look around! Do you see trees and flowers or do you see pavement and telephone wires? It is now scientifically proven that EMF (electromagnetic field) rays from overhead lights and hidden cellular phone antennas affect our health. Sleep is the most important thing we can do to stay healthy and keep a positive mind frame, for if you are not sleeping 8-9 hours in accordance with nature and the natural circadian rhythm of the earth, then you are missing a key to health. Eating great food is the first fundamental law of feeling your best. Supplementing your diet with high-powered herbs and concentrated green formulas can add lots of extra nutrition to your daily regime. Warrior Mystic Formulas has a nutritional program that would benefit depression and covers the body-mind-spirit healing approach.

Nik Notes:
I know from experience that depression can come in many forms.  When I feel depressed it causes a wide range of reactions; I feel like I’m trapped, running forever in circles, or even violent.  These reactions make me seem moody, even rude at times. In these situations it is not healthy to harbor these feelings.  Every man will know what I’m talking about. My father kept his anger, sadness, even joy to himself, as your father probably did too.  Depression is not abnormal. No one’s life is always happy, but learning to at least recognize what your body and brain are feeling is important.  The next step is much more difficult because reacting in a positive way is not easy. Most of the time it is a greater hurdle to smile than to frown.  We have a variety of supplements to help with anxiety, low serotonin and brain health.  I’m no psychiatrist, but I know that for me diet is important, so is sleep, and having fun as much as possible in everyday activities. Try to enjoy life!
