Jeff's Positive Vibrations:  Greens, if you know it or not, are one of the most important nutrients that we need in our diets. We are always reminded to get 5 to 7 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables, and dark leafy greens are a part of that recommendation. The reason dark leafy greens and other greens are so important is the green pigment which is called “chlorophyll”. Chlorophyll almost matches our own blood, chemically. The only difference is that in the middle of the structure of chlorophyll is a magnesium molecule and in the middle of our blood is an iron molecule. Chlorophyll is so healthy for us because it is a very potent cleanser and detoxifier of our organs and our blood. Supplements that are called “super foods” include greens that are high in naturally occurring chlorophyll. Some of these foods are alfalfa, barley grass, chlorella, blue-green algae, parsley, and wheatgrass, just to name a few. These super foods are so good for us nutritionally. Alfalfa is one of the highest sources of minerals you can find in a plant that grows on land.

Emily's Ideas:  Chlorophyll is the green pigment found in plants.  This pigment is one of the many constituents that make green foods so beneficial for us to consume.  Chlorophyll is structurally similar to human hemoglobin, which is the part of the red blood cell that carries oxygen from the lungs to the muscles.  The only difference between these two molecules is that chlorophyll has a magnesium atom in the center of the molecule where hemoglobin has an iron atom.  Because of this similarity, we can use green foods to literally build our blood strength.  In fact, chlorophyll has even been used as a substitute for blood transfusions in times of need!!!!  As with most nutrients, it’s best to consume them in a whole food form rather than isolated.  My favorite green herbs include Alfalfa, Horsetail, Lemon balm, Nettle, Parsley, and Peppermint.
