Words from us…
Wayne’s World
We have lots of hot days ahead in the valley of fun. At a minimum we Las Vegas city dwellers
should be consuming two quarts of quality water a day. Our high heat and summer
humidity slow the natural evaporation process of sweating. Many of us stay
indoors with fans and air conditioning. Drink plenty of fluids including herbal
teas or sports beverages with electrolytes (no sugar or artificial coloring or
flavors). Trace Mineral Research is an ace company of excellent
electrolyte replacement products. Try their new “Elite” formula. If you work
outside, avoid the hottest part of the day when possible and replace the fluids
lost in sweat. Take breaks and always check frequently for signs of heat stroke
(the body loses its ability to regulate its own temperature). Heat stroke is
characterized by hot and dry skin, the inability to sweat, a racing pulse, rapid
or shallow breathing, a temperature of 105 or higher, sometimes delirium or loss
of consciousness. Heat stroke requires immediate attention. Call 9-1-1, lay the
victim down in a cool place with their feet slightly elevated and gently apply
cool water to the skin followed with fanning to stimulate sweating. Ice packs
may be applied to the armpits and groin. Heat stroke is a life-threatening
condition. Also remember to never leave children or pets alone in a closed car.

Jenny's Jive:
Eating
moisture-rich hydrating foods is yet another way to keep your hydration level
up. Watermelon is the most hydrating food. All other melons are excellent
sources as well. Stay away from citrus fruits which have a high acid content and
can dry the throat of natural moisture. Vegetables with high water content like
bok choy, celery, escarole etc. are great choices. Foods that are closest to
their natural sources generally have the most nutrition and natural vitamins.
Eat fresh fruits, one to two servings a day and go organic when you can. Your
state of health is strongly influenced by the food you feed your body. What goes
into your body can either create health or destroy it.
Jeff's Positive Vibrations:
It’s so hot!!!! That’s what everyone is
saying right now. The question is: How do we stay hydrated during these long
days of triple digit temperatures? Water is the key and the foundation to a
healthy body. Until recently most medical theory was based on the assumption
that the 20% of our body that is solid tissue is what determined our health,
since that is where most outward signs of disease and illness are found. It was
thought that the 80% of our body that is liquid merely supported the structure
of bone and organ tissue. We now know the opposite to be true; the fluids that
flow through our body are what create our level of well being. You have to
realize the tremendous healing ability our body has and how much that ability
depends on water. Naturally the quality of the water we consume will have a very
dramatic impact on our overall state of health. Every healing and life-giving
process that happens in our body happens through water!
Emily's Ideas:
Mention the word hydration and the first
thing that comes to mind is water. What some of us may not know is that it
takes more than water to keep our tissues hydrated. Electrolytes and dietary
oils are also essential components that keep the proper water balance in and
outside of our cells. Our cell membranes are comprised of oils. Because our
bodies will utilize whatever fats we have in our diet, it is important to
consume the good fats, such as the omega-3, 6, and 9’s. These oils create
healthy cell membranes which allow water and nutrients to pass through the
membranes into the cells, and wastes out of the cells easier. If we feed our
bodies hydrogenated oils, trans fats, or fried foods, our cell membranes become
less flexible and do not allow for easy transport. Herbs can be used to help
correct dry/atrophic tissue states. Symptoms of this imbalance may include; dry
mucous and synovial membranes, constipation, dry skin, low urine excretion, and
excessive thirst. This state can be balanced with moistening, nutritive herbs
such as: Aloe vera, Anise, Burdock root, Chickweed, Fenugreek seed, Marshmallow
root, Mullein, Red Clover, and Slippery Elm bark.

Speaking Words of Wisdom
Be cool with cool thoughts. Do you believe that your mind
power can influence your physical body? You should, because it’s scientifically
proven that what you say and think can manifest on the physical realm. Do you
say, “I’m hot” or “it sure is miserable outside”? Well guess what, you just made
yourself hotter! The human body is 75% water and needs at least 2 liters
(64 ounces) a day just to function properly. When the human body lacks water,
many systems immediately function poorly. Water is used for brain function and
everyday energy along with digestion, circulation, elimination, and healing.
What else can enhance your cool summer days? Electrolytes are minerals in your
blood and other body fluids that carry an electric charge. It is important for
the balance of electrolytes in your body to be maintained, because they affect
the amount of water in your body, blood pH, muscle action, and other important
processes. You lose electrolytes when you sweat, and these must be replenished
by drinking lots of fluids. Look for a good natural mineral supplement with
trace minerals and add this to your water or juice everyday. Herbs can help you
stay cool. American ginseng is a great herb to keep the body cool. Use this herb
in capsule or liquid form and make sure it is an extract. Hibiscus is another
herb that has been used for hundreds of years to keep the body cool. Hibiscus is
best used as a tea, so drink it everyday for many healthy benefits. Another tip
is to wear light-colored, absorbable, loose-fitting clothes, like 100% organic
cotton or hemp.
