JULY 2002

Connective tissue requires regular movement of the joint to nourish cartilage.  When you exercise your joints by normal movement, cartilage is compressed, squeezing out some of the fluid it contains. During periods of rest the fluid returns and is reabsorbed. Use it or lose it, just like muscle, bone or any other tissue in the body. To nourish the cartilage and maintain healthy joints, it is essential to combine healthy movement and nutrition.

As an educated customer of Stay Healthy! , you know that diseases such as osteoporosis and arthritis are not inevitable with age. This statement is especially true if people take control of their nutritional health and understand the supplements available for these common predicaments. More than 100 different diseases fall under the arthritis banner, affecting nearly 43 million Americans. Osteoporosis is considered a major public health threat for more than 28 million Americans, 80% of whom are women.  Rheumatoid arthritis affects 2.1 million Americans, again, most of whom are women. It is because of adverse effects of conventional treatment that sufferers of joint & bone problems are turning to alternative and nutritional therapy. Essential to the alternative treatments are basic nutrition and exercise. Specialists recommend a diet high in fiber, and avoidance of alcohol, caffeine, saturated fat, and tomatoes and eggplant (nightshade family) for arthritis sufferers. These are the supplements one should investigate and use for joint repair: antioxidants, essential fatty acids, glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, calcium, magnesium, Devils Claw, Collagen, Vitamins C, D3 & K2, phytoestrogens, isoflavones, melatonin, and Ester-C (calcium ascorbate). Inquire of our staff for more information on joint health. Let’s make this a joint effort.
Thank you so much for your patronage. Stay Healthy!

The Evelyn Files…
According to the research done by Thomas M. Newmark and Paul Schulick, Zyflamend is as effective as Celebrex and Vioxx for joint health.  Zyflamend has NO negative side effects.  What is Zyflamend?  It is an herbal combination from New Chapter designed to reduce inflammation, inhibit cox-2 enzyme, promote healthy joint function and normal cell growth.  Also, Zyflamend has anti-aging properties that help eliminate free radicals.  There are two varieties of this formula, daytime and nighttime.  This is just one of many formulas that work extremely well for joint health.
Good health to you always. Evelyn J

James Sloane answers questions:
Joint health starts with proper digestion. The proteins that form the tissues of the bones and joints are formed primarily from silica, vitamin C, sulfur, proline, and traces of copper and zinc. Of these silica is not only the most important, but also the most difficult to absorb. Silica is dependant on sufficient stomach acidity to be properly absorbed. As we age stomach acidity decreases, leading to a decrease of silica levels in the tissues. The use of antacids and acid blockers contribute to the problem. Deficiencies of silica lead to disorders including osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, emphysema, arteriosclerosis, diverticulosis, wrinkles, stretch marks, soft nails, and brittle hair. Concerning joints, silica is used in the production of glucosamine, chondroitin, and synovial fluid.

Joint pain is one of the most common complaints among Americans when it comes to health.  Affecting people of all ages, whether due to a sports strain or arthritis, it can be very painful.  I usually recommend Zyflamend from New Chapter.   Zyflamend uses natural herbal extracts to inhibit the Cox-2 enzyme, which has been shown to reduce inflammation and pain associated with arthritis.  Another great supplement to take is ginger.  Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory and it is great for any swelling in the body.  Also, I believe cleansing would be great to relieve toxins.  Toxins accumulating and storing in the joints can sometimes cause pain or lead to arthritis.  Non-traumatizing exercise is great such as, walking or swimming.  Don’t forget to drink your water either, it could be the most important thing you do for your health.  For more information on joint health visit our staff here at Stay Healthy!

J.C. Speaking Words of Wisdom
Let’s begin on the physical level. What nutrition do you need to help prevent or rid yourself of joint problems? The standard approach is Glucosamine Sulfate (1500mg daily), MSM, (2000mg daily)
Vit C (Amla), and trace minerals. A more thorough approach would include herbs to reduce inflammation, move the blood and move the chi, herbs like ginger, licorice root, and astragalus. It takes more than just nutrition to heal and incorporate the healing into a life long practice.
The fundamentals include exercise and energy work (Chi-Gong) to facilitate the flow of blood and energy through the joints of the body. A complete healing would cover these and include a mental/emotional affirmation to program the body’s inherit homeostasis (My body functions smoothly and my energy flows naturally. I release the past trauma and instill in my spirit vibrant health).  Chi-Gong stimulates the acupressure points to release energy blocks and incorporates specific body movements to send energy and blood to the affected area. Rotating the body is very helpful. Try to do small circles in a full range of motion in the affected joint area, for this builds the synovial fluid, sending nutrients to the area and increasing flexibility and allowing energy to flow freely through the meridian systems. Ask me about more Chi-Gong exercises.

Knowledge applied is wisdom…

Nik Notes: Although I am lucky enough to escape joint pain, some of my friends are not.  When they call me asking what they should take, I recommend Trace Minerals’ Glucosamine & MSM, for it helps rebuild joint tissue and controls pain effectively.
