January 2002

In order to reach your
weight loss destination, you have to know where you’re starting from. For one
week write down everything you eat in order to identify food-related patterns,
thoughts, emotions, and moods. Are you making poor food choices based on
boredom, anger, anxiety, stress or fatigue? If so, perhaps you could plan
strategies on how to address those emotions with something other than
cheesecake.

Words from us…
Wayne’s World
This issue starts the New Year with
new beginnings and the end of the winter holiday season. This January, and for
the rest of your life, resolve to stay slim and healthy. This is possible by
controlling your carbohydrate intake. Remember that plateaus occur in any
slimming down process, so do not get discouraged or lose your commitment to
long-term weight loss. Look for hidden carbs in your food choices, do not
consume aspartame or coffee, rid yourself of Candida overgrowth, exercise,
review your medications, remove food allergies from your diet, and check out
your thyroid. Weight gain, water retention and high triglyceride levels are
well-known side effects of hormone replacement therapy. Take your supplements to
make up for food and soil deficiencies and other environmental assaults. So
look at everything you’ve been doing and if necessary, go back to the basics.

The Evelyn Files…
Most people think they can lose weight by
going on a diet and eating less food. Linda R. Page makes many useful
suggestions on this subject on p. 518 of her book Healthy Healing. She
gives additional information on “The Six Most Common Weight Loss Blocks” on p.
519. Listed as follows, they are: 1) Lazy metabolism & thyroid imbalance 2)
Overeating fat & calories 3) Sugar craving & blood sugar imbalance 4) Liver
malfunction & cellulite formation 5) Poor circulation & low energy 6) Poor
elimination.
If you have a weight problem I suggest you check these blockers. Pick this book
up on your next trip to our store.
Good health to you always. Evelyn J

answers questions:
Weight gain can occur for a lot of reasons, including estrogen dominance and
toxicity. Estrogen dominance can occur from hormone imbalances, estrogen
replacement therapy, menopause, or from hidden estrogens in our foods such as in
beef, chicken, milk, and alcohol. Toxicity causes weight gain as a protective
mechanism by the body. Toxins in excess of what the liver can handle are
converted into fat so they will not kill you. This is why people get sick when
they go on crash diets. The body starts to break fat down for fuel, which
releases the toxins back into the blood. To boost your metabolism, I would
suggest starting with dulse. The iodine in this herb will help boost thyroid
function. Look for an herb called coleus forskohlii. This herb will stimulate
the burning of body fat, and assist your thyroid. Thermogenesis (the burning of
body fat) is dependent on an enzyme regulator known as cyclic adenosine
monophosphate (cAMP or cyclic AMP). Forskohlii works by raising cAMP. Next,
take the herb yerba mate' in conjunction with the forskohlii. Yerba mate'
contains a methylxanthine, known as mateine. This compound retards the breakdown
of cAMP, giving it
increased fat burning
properties.
Tarah’s Corner-
Exercise is the most
important factor in weight loss and weight control. Think about it. It’s
common sense. When you exercise you feel better about yourself, you feel more
energetic, and you burn fat and build muscle. Many people want a “quick fix”
for losing weight. We want to be able to just pop a pill and go on with our
normal lifestyle. That might work temporarily, but what if we gain the weight
back? This would be a waste of money and time! The sensible thing to do would
be to change your lifestyle. Eat right. Raw fruits and veggies, high fiber
foods and low fat foods are great. Stay away from grease, junk foods, and
sugar. Get on a regular exercise schedule. Set goals for the weight you want
to achieve. When you do these things you will be on your way to better
health.

Speaking Words of Wisdom
When it comes to controlling weight loss,
motivation leads the way.
Only a proper weight management program will lead to long-term success.
Try not to think of it as a diet but a new health regime, be very
specific with your desired outcome and set goals. A journal will be key to
following your plan and seeing your progress.
Make up affirmations to motivate yourself, such as “I will do what it
takes to be lean and healthy” etc., and repeat it daily first thing in the
morning and before bed. I also would recommend hanging pictures up that inspire
you, like someone in good shape working out. Visualization is very powerful when
it comes to programming your mind/body connection in order to make physical
changes. Taking it slow is better then trying to fast once a week or extreme
dieting.
A natural whole food balanced diet is better then any new fad diet.
Remember it’s all in the mind.
Believe in yourself and you can do anything!
Knowledge applied is
wisdom…
NIK Notes:
To lose a pound of fat a month, all you have to do is cut 100 calories from your
diet everyday, assuming the intake and expenditure of all other calories remains
the same. That's because a pound of body fat is equivalent to about 3,500
calories. So if you cut 100 calories a day for 31 days, you're cutting 3,100
calories--or about a pound. See www.freeweightloss.com “weight loss articles
section” for tips on cutting out those 100 calories every day.
